The Kuat Piston Pro X Brings Bike Rack Design to the Next Level Hydro-pneumatic arms, wide wheel/tire compatibility, zero-frame-contact, integrated led taillights among key features

Kuat has made a name for itself in bicycle racks by creating beautiful, simple designs that are as easy to use as they are good looking on your car. The newest addition to the Kuat line, the Piston Pro X, takes the brand’s design ethos to another level, for the most premium rack it has ever released.

The Kuat Piston Pro X

Easier to use, stronger, more durable, this rack takes everything up a notch over the NV 2.0, the previous range-topping Kuat model. One detail that noticeably sets this rack apart the most is its hydro-pneumatic dual tire arms. They fold away when not in use, but unfold at the touch of a button. Think of them like the hydraulic cylinders that prop your trunk open. Kuat calls it, simply enough, OneTap technology. The tool free tire chocks can be moved with a single hand and fit a wide variety of tire/wheel sizes (18”-29” wheels and up to 5” tires). Plus, it accepts bike with wheelbases up to 53”. All this, without the need for any adapters. And the arms never touch the frame, protecting your bike’s paint.

Built to Last

It can hold up to 67 pounds per bike tray.

A burly construction was an important objective for this rack as well. It is made of aluminum paired to a solid steel hitch, giving it an impressive capacity of 67 pounds per bike—allowing it to even handle e-bikes. (An optional e-bike ramp makes loading the sometimes hefty bikes easier.) The dual tire arms get a special Genuine Kashima Coat, essentially an enhanced durable anodized coating. A custom formulated Tiger Powder coating finishes other parts of the rack, while stainless steel hardware, and automotive grade 750-hour salt spray on all steel hardware all contribute to high durability.

Safety Lighting

Included LED safety lighting.

A rack full of bikes can easily interfere with your car’s taillights and signals. That’s why the Piston Pro X includes LED taillights that duplicate your taillights, brake lights and signals. It connects to your car via a magnetic quick connect plug cable at the trailer light connection.

Expandability

Two bikes are just the start. One- and two-bike expansions will be available to bring your total cargo to three or four bikes. For extra ground clearance, the trays are tiered, like stadium seating. When using an add-on, a pull handle replaces the foot/hand actuated pivot making folding and unfolding simpler.

Security

The rack comes with a semi-integrated cable lock.

A semi-integrated ultra-high strand 12mm cable lock adds an extra level of security to your bikes. It also includes a hitch lock and tamper resistant hitch cam.

Pricing and Availability

The Piston Pro X will cost $1,389 and will be available in spring 2022. Simpler versions of the Piston Pro X will be available in fall 2022 starting at $989, but there is no word yet on which features will be scaled back on these models. Kuat offers a lifetime warranty on the rack.
