It was a busy Thursday morning on the tech wires, with announcements from BMC of a new BMC SLR01 Disc, Campagnolo has not given up on rim braking with a new AC3 carbon braking surface and Castelli wants the white jersey at Le Tour, no matter where its under 25 riders finish.

New Boras with AC3
Campagnolo made headlines with its new HR11 disc braking components, but today we’ve learned that the venerable Italian manufacturer is not yet ready to give up on rim braking. A new brake track design called AC3 – All Conditions Carbon Control – will be part of all new Bora 35, 50 and Ultra TT tubular and clincher wheels.

The Bora line of wheels have long been admired for light weight, a lively ride and incredible durability. They have also set the standard industry wide for heat resistance since the inception of the carbon wheel. With the new AC3 brake track, Campagnolo aims to go to the front of the class in both dry and wet braking.

AC3 features a grooved texture designed to let water move away from the brake track, giving the pad the ability to create more friction in any conditions. Campagnolo has also reworked the wheel’s carbon lay up to handle increased braking force and friction. The results – according to Campagnolo – are a three percent increase in dry performance and a whopping 43-percent improvement in the wet. We’ll have to wait for a test set to verify that, but as Campagnolo has always been some of the best rim braking in carbon, we’re excited to try the new AC3 Bora’s soon.

Team SKY Wants the White Jersey

At the Tour de France the white jersey traditionally signifies the highest under 25 rider in the general classification, last year that was Adam Yates of Orica. This year every rider on Team SKY will be in white. Castelli is swapping out the traditionally black kit for white, while utilizing the same data pattern we’ve seen on the black kits.

Team SKY is also allowing fans to get in on the action by putting fans names on the iconic blue SKY stripe down the jersey’s back. Head to teamskypromotions.com/whitejersey by June 13th for a chance to get your name on the kit.

It’s interesting to note the Tour de France organizers used to guard the various leader’s jerseys colors very closely to help fans spot them on the road. The old Once team was forced to swap their yellow kits for pink at the Tour every year. Those rules seem to have been relaxed considerably these days.

BMC’s SLR01 Goes Disc
Following the trend of grand tour race machines like the Tarmac and SuperSix EVO going disc, BMC has launched a disc version of its highly respected SLR01. The original SLR01 debuted a process called ACE, a program that ‘made’ ten’s of thousands of virtual frames and then tested them, eventually spitting out the optimum carbon recipe, lay up and tube shapes. This new disc SLR01 used the type of process to optimize not only for the new disc brake loads, but to try and improve the bike overall as well. That’s a tall order since the original BMC SLR01 was one of the best road bikes ever made. The new fork features asymmetric blades, the seat cluster has been redesigned to expose more seat post, the cockpit now features full internal routing of brake lines and shift cables, while the disc frame is just 815 grams for a medium. That’s the same target BMC had for the original rim brake bike.

The geometry is almost identical to the rime brake SLR01 with one large caveat. Instead of creating a novel solution like an offset rear up or shifted crank set, BMC has just increased the chain stays to create a chain line in spec with Shimano guidelines. It’s a whopping 8mm longer than the current rim brake bike. That’s a lot. Smaller differences have robbed otherwise quick and lively bikes of that direct and explosive feel at the pedals, while creating a more sedate and relaxed feel at the bars. On the plus side, that extra length takes tire clearance to a realistic 28mm. We’ll have to ride it to determine if the longer rear end detunes the SLR01 in a significant way. Stay tuned.
