Gravel Rigs We Dig: Kona Sutra LTD From Issue 98

One of the best parts about gravel riding is that there’s no consensus on what a gravel bike needs to be. So, consequently, there are nearly as many different approaches to gravel bikes as there are gravel riders. Known best for its mountain bikes, Kona has leaned into its off-road knowledge for many of its drop-bar bikes, including the Sutra LTD. This chromoly steel frame is more of a mountain biker’s gravel bike for anyone who wants control on technical single track and massive clearance (it comes stocked with 700×50c WTB Venture TCS tires!). Because this bike is also focused more on adventuring and less on getting places quickly, there are gear mounts galore. Off-road veterans will find the SRAM Rival 1 drivetrain with a small 36-tooth chainring up front and a 10–42 cassette on the back a familiar sight, with the range to take you to the top of all the best trails and descents. But since there are no shocks, thick bar tape comes to the rescue to provide additional padding. And, to seal the deal, the bike comes in gold. What more could you want? Oh, a lifetime warranty on the frame. Now that really does seal the deal.
