Colnago’s recent launch of the C60 proves what a fascinating company it can be. Ernesto Colnago embraced carbon very early in the game and created a road disc version of his renowned C59 before most brands even knew disc was coming. The man and his brand are clearly forward thinking.
On the other hand, while Colnago’s all new flagship C60 follows some current trends – large diameter tube shapes with very thin walls – it holds onto a production technique all but abandoned by the rest of the industry; tube and lug construction. While BMC and Time make some bikes in this fashion the current production mode preferred is monocoque or tube to tube construction. Colnago does make some bikes this way in Asia, but when it comes to their flagship and homegrown Italian manufacturing it prefers carbon tube and carbon lug.
Gruber Images was in Italy for the recent unveiling of the C60 and, along with Colnago, graciously shared this behind the scenes look at the factory, the production, the bike and the man himself – Ernesto Colnago.
