After a difficult 2013 in the rainbow jersey of world champion BMC’s Philippe Gilbert spent a long winter focusing on entering 2014 in better form than ever before and it paid off handsomely. A stunning attack on the legendary Cauberg saw him distance his rivals at the 2014 Amstel Gold Race, while holding the shattered peloton off over the final 3 kilometers to the new finish. The Cauberg in Valkenburg, Netherlands has special memories for Gilbert. He won Amstel Gold on two previous occasions on its summit and even his world championship was achieved on its slopes. With Fleche-Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege up next, Gilbert has begun his attempt to become the first rider to ever complete the Ardennes triple twice. He won his first Ardenne triple in 2011.
