The big news from Reynolds this past week at PressCamp is the revamping of their performance line of Attack, Assault and Strike wheels. All three have been upgraded with Reynoldss enhanced Swirl Lip Generator (SLG) technology and a wider rim profile. SLG is a strategically placed lip on the inside of the rim that generates a lower pressure region and manages airflow around the spoke face. According to CFD analysis, it results in a 35% increase in aerodynamic performance over the previous generation of Assault and Strike models. In addition, the new 25mm rim width delivers better aerodynamics, better handling and more cornering grip due to the wider contact patch. All wheels use 20 spokes in the front, 24 in the back and are Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo cassette compatible.
The Attack SLG is the climbing wheelset in the performance line with a 29mm deep rim and a weight of just 1,365 grams. Along with SLG technology the Attack SLG uses Reynolds PR3 technology, which uses three different carbon fiber lay-ups. The Attack also takes advantage of Reynolds CTg braking system, which employs a proprietary brake track and Cryo-Blue pads to minimize heat build up. The rims are then laced to Reynolds alloy via DT-Swiss Aero comp, double butted spokes with external nipples for ease of adjustment. The Attack SLG wheelset retails for $1,600.
The same technology that goes into the Attack can also be found in the deeper section Assault SLG wheels. The Assault SLG wheels feature a 41mm deep profile for an increased aero advantage while still maintaining a low weight of just of 1,475 grams. Unique to the Assault SLG line is a disc brake model for the new breed of disc specific road and cross bikes. The addition of the disc specific hubs bump up the weight of the Assault SLG Disc to 1540 grams. The Assault SLG wheelset retails for $1,800, while the disc specific goes for $1,850.
Rounding out the revised performance line is the Strike SLG. The Strike SLG is intended for time trials, triathlons, and flat road races. It sees all the improvements of the Attack and Assault SLG models but in a deeper 62mm profile. The Strike SLG weighs 1,635 grams and retails for $1,900.
