Alexandre Vinokourov announced to French website RMC that he will hang up his bike after the London Olympics this summer. The 38-year-old originally retired after a heavy fall during stage nine of the 2011 Tour de France in which he fractured his leg. He later announced he was returning for another season with Astana.
“I start in the Tour of Langkawi Malaysia on March 4. Then I race in Catalonia, from March 19 to 25, after that we will see. I want to start in the Tour, but be not anonymous in the peloton.”
The two time winner of La Doyenne hopes the Olympics and the Tour will be a nice end to his career of 15 years.
“Ukraine has only two places in London,” he notes. “I think I’m there, but we’ll see. Especially the Olympic time trial interests me, the road race will be difficult.”
