The International Cycling Unions Management Committee met today in Copenhagen, Denmark on the occasion of the 2011 UCI Road World Championships. During its third annual meeting, the UCI Management Committee awarded the 2015 UCI Road World Championships to Richmond, Virginia (USA).
The UCI President, Mr. Pat McQuaid, welcomed the decision which is part of the globalization process in cycling and which will allow the American continent, where cycling is enjoying impressive development, to once again host the most important event of the UCI calendar, twelve years after the Canadian edition in the town of Hamilton.
The UCI Road World Championships had been held previously in the United States in 1986 in Colorado Springs.
“Richmond is thrilled to be selected to host the 2015 road world cycling championships, joining a list of great cities like Madrid, Florence and Copenhagen,” said Richmond Mayor, Dwight C. Jones.
Hosting the world championships will help bring Richmond one step closer to being one of the world’s great bicycling cities.”
The 2015 UCI Road World Championships are scheduled to take place September 19-27. Events will include the road race, individual time trial and a new team time trial. Elite men and women, under 23 men, and junior men and women will be competing.
