July 31, 2011 – Germany’s Marcel Kittel of the Skil-Shimano team won the first stage of the Tour of Poland on Sunday beating Norway’s Alexander Kristoff in a sprint finish after the 101.5km run from Pruszkow to Warsaw.
Francesco Chicchi took third place on the finish line in Warsaw, for the first stage in the Tour de Pologne.
I worked a good sprint, said Francesco Chicchi after the arrival. Unfortunately, I got a bit shut out and I couldnt really bust a move. Anyhow, I dont think I could have upset Kittel; Marcel really showed rare power in his sprint. Perhaps I could have made it second. Regardless, I feel good and I hope I can improve on this third place in the next stages.
It was the first win by the 23-year-old Kittel in a World Tour event.
Monday’s second stage will be over 162km from Czestochowa to Dabrowa Gornicza in southern Poland.
