Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) took his second straight victory at the Gran Piemonte in Italy. Gilbert took the win with one of his trademark solo moves within the final kilometer. Second place went to Leonardo Bertagnolli (Androni Giocattoli), while Matti Breschel (Saxo Bank) took third. Italian Filippo Pozzato (Katusha) finished fourth to continue a string of near miss performances.
The victory makes Gilbert the odds on favorite for Saturdays Tour of Lombardy. Last year Gilbert won the Gran Piemonte before dominating in the Tour of Lombardy. A second straight win this year would go a long way towards making up for a disappointing World Championships where Gilbert was considered the favorite.
